Common Mistakes to Avoid When Decorating Small Spaces

When you are living in a small space, the general tips include having a lot of storage spaces, keeping your colours light, scaling your pieces to the right size, and making the most out of every corner of your home. But did you know that you can do it wrong that way, too? A lot of people are aware of the general “must-dos” and “must-haves” when living in a small space.

On furniture

Having small furniture is advisable when setting up a small space. However using multiple small pieces can make a space feel cramped and cluttered. Do not overdo small scale furniture. Sometimes it is better to have one main piece and complement it with a few small pieces.

On decorations

A lot of people think that putting decorative accessories on surfaces is the best way to beautify their homes, but the truth is, sometimes it can make the home feel messy instead of festive. If you’re not using your wall space for shelves or storage, it is best to use wall art or pictures instead. Clear surfaces give the eyes a break, especially if you already have decors in the surrounding areas.

On division

A tip for people living in small spaces would be to assign functions for rooms. Although this is a good tool to determine your room and space, a lot of people use drapes or shelves or even furniture to divide their homes into sections. This is fine as long as you don’t break up the space. Having definite lines will highlight small spaces instead of giving it the illusion of space.

On storage

You can never have too much storage — as long as you keep them concealed. Having exposed baskets and shelves will make your space feel too busy. It can also mess up your theme or design. Stick to smart storage solutions that aren’t too obvious to keep your home looking fresh and organised.

We all make mistakes but that’s okay. Life is a learning process anyway. Which mistakes have you made? Would you like to share some small space tips with us? Let us know! Cheers!
